Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, California. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself through artwork. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of an elementary school student. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one member of the jury, and then look through their trash. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective. Her name is associated with a well-known actress that has been in American Experience (1987), A More Perfect Union (2009) as well as other movies.
